Covestro inaugurates the first industrial-scale polycarbonate copolymer production plant at its Antwerp site. The new technology, developed in-house, is based on an innovative and solvent-free melting process combined with a new reactor concept. This enables the production of polycarbonates with adaptable properties. The production plant involves an investment of around 50 million euros.
The new production process is not only less complex, it is also connected to the existing infrastructure in Antwerp with already four production lines for polycarbonate. The result is a world-class production facility combined with the flexibility of a stand-alone unit. The new product is intended for applications such as antenna and battery housings, electric car charging stations, solar panels, medical devices and IT applications such as notebooks.
“This new manufacturing process is globally unique of its kind and allows us to offer a wide range of material innovations,” said Sucheta Govil, Chief Commercial Officer atĀ Covestro. “With the new plant, we can now produce and launch new polymer materials on an industrial scale much faster. In our Solutions & Specialities segment, we focus on advanced products with a high innovation content.”
