Uniper orders Sunfire electrolyzer for Bad Lauchstädt hydrogen project

Hydrogen

Germany – Uniper is implementing green hydrogen technologies on an industrial scale within the Central German Chemical Triangle. A 30 MW pressurized alkaline electrolyzer from Sunfire will be the centerpiece of a demonstration project in Bad Lauchstädt.

One of the original energy transition projects, the Bad Lauchstädt energy park, is now in the execution stage. Sunfire, an electrolysis company with its headquarters in Dresden, has received a 30 MW pressurized alkaline electrolyzer order from Uniper. The delivery date is set for 2024.

The project will implement industrial-scale green hydrogen production, transportation, storage, and economic use in Saxony-Anhalt, showcasing fresh approaches for the coming energy infrastructure. In the area affected by structural change, Uniper is working with its project partners to generate value and jobs.

Making hydrogen with wind

One of the largest planned electrolysis systems of its kind is Sunfire’s 30 MW electrolysis plant. The electrolyzer will create green hydrogen at the Bad Lauchstädt energy park using renewable electricity from a nearby wind farm. The hydrogen generated in a second stage of the project can be momentarily stored in a salt cavern that has been specially outfitted. It will then be fed into a hydrogen network for the nearby chemical industries via a modified gas pipeline. It will also be utilized in urban mobility solutions in the future, such as hydrogen-powered buses.

Sunfire provides electrolysis solutions that enable industrial businesses and utilities to reduce their long-term reliance on fossil fuels and CO2 emissions.
