Denmark – ABB has been contracted by H2 Energy Esbjerg to provide basic electrical engineering for the power distribution from grid point of connection to electrolyzers, and for other process equipment at its 1 GW hydrogen production facility in Esbjerg and hydrogen distribution hub in Fredericia, Denmark.

The plant, among the largest hydrogen developments in Europe, will produce up to 90,000 tons of hydrogen per year โ€“ the equivalent of about 1.9 million barrels of oil per year.

ABB will draw on its expertise in the Power-to-X (PtX) sector for the development of green hydrogen. The PtX facility in Esbjerg will convert renewable electricity from offshore wind into green hydrogen using electrolysis.

Hydrogen production

The production of green hydrogen from offshore wind has the potential to decarbonize heavy industry and road transportation. Green hydrogen can be used as a fuel for trucks, buses, and other heavy vehicles. It can also be used to produce green e-fuels, such as methanol and ammonia.

One of the main challenges facing the green hydrogen industry is the cost of production. Green hydrogen is currently more expensive than traditional fossil fuels. However, the cost of green hydrogen is expected to come down as the technology develops and becomes more widely adopted.

The construction of the 1 GW hydrogen production facility in Esbjerg is a significant development for the green hydrogen industry. It represents a commitment from ABB and H2 Energy Esbjerg to accelerate the development of green hydrogen and support the transition to a low-carbon economy.
