TotalEnergies and Air Liquide have entered into an agreement for the long-term supply of green and low-carbon hydrogen to TotalEnergiesā€™ refining and petrochemical platform in Normandy. This collaboration marks a pivotal step in reducing CO2 emissions and contributes to the shared commitment of both companies to decarbonize industrial operations in the Axe Seine corridor.

The core objective of this partnership is to significantly reduce carbon emissions at the Gonfreville site, with the potential to cut CO2 emissions by an impressive 150,000 tons annually. This ambitious endeavor underscores the dedication of TotalEnergies and Air Liquide to environmental sustainability and their role in the decarbonization of industrial processes.

Green and Low-Carbon Hydrogen Supply

The project outlines the supply of 10,000 tons of green hydrogen per year to TotalEnergiesā€™ platform in Normandy, along with an additional 5,000 tons per year of low-carbon hydrogen, commencing from the second half of 2026. This multifaceted project consists of two integrated components:

  1. Hydrogen Production: The Normandy electrolyzer, to be constructed and operated by Air Liquide, will have a total electrical capacity of 200 MW. TotalEnergies will have access to half of this capacity, ensuring a stable supply of hydrogen to its refinery.
  2. Renewable Power Supply: TotalEnergies will provide approximately 700 GWh/year of renewable and low-carbon power to the Air Liquide electrolyzer, equivalent to 100 MW of capacity, representing the portion of hydrogen destined for TotalEnergiesā€™ Normandy refinery.

Bernard Pinatel, President of Refining & Chemicals at TotalEnergies, emphasized the significance of this partnership in TotalEnergiesā€™ ambition to decarbonize hydrogen usage in its European refineries by 2030. The utilization of renewable electricity from solar and wind projects to power the electrolyzer aligns with TotalEnergiesā€™ role as an integrated power supplier.

Pascal Vinet, Executive Vice President of Air Liquide, underlined the importance of providing practical decarbonization solutions to customers. The Air Liquide Normandā€™Hy project not only contributes to decarbonization but also supports the industry and mobility sectors in their carbon reduction journey. This collaboration reaffirms Air Liquideā€™s commitment to renewable and low-carbon hydrogen production on an industrial scale, furthering the development of hydrogen in Normandy.
