The Netherlands – Uniper has chosen Plug Power to design the electrolyzer technology for Uniper’s Maasvlakte plant in the Port of Rotterdam.
Uniper will launch 100 MW of Plug electrolysis capacity to produce green hydrogen at the Maasvlakte Energy Hub by 2026, swiftly extending that capacity to 500 MW by 2030 at the latest.
Following Uniper’s positive FID, Plug will provide ten prefabricated PEM (proton exchange membrane) electrolyzer arrays for Uniper’s flagship project, H2Maasvlakte. Plug’s mature stack electrolyzer technology was chosen by Uniper.
Decarbonizing Rotterdam Harbor
The Rotterdam Harbor area, which includes the Maasvlakte, is the Netherlands’ largest carbon-emitting industrial concentration. The area emitted 23,4 Mton CO2 in 2021. Decarbonizing this area alone would provide a major contribution to the Dutch overall goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2050.
H2Maasvlakte FEED
Plug creates the electrolysis technology for this project as part of the H2Maasvlakte Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) study being conducted by Uniper in collaboration with Technip Energies. Topsector Energy (TSE) subsidies from the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate are funding the FEED research. Plug’s H2Maasvlakte electrolyzer technology will be manufactured in the European Union and the United States.
