Germany – bp will assess the viability of constructing a new hydrogen hub in Germany. The Wilhelmshaven project is anticipated to contain an ammonia cracker that might produce up to 130,000 tons of low-carbon hydrogen per year from green ammonia starting in 2028.
Green hydrogen projects worldwide will export green ammonia to Wilhelmshaven. Nitrogen and hydrogen from renewable water electrolysis make green ammonia. The cracker breaks down green ammonia into green hydrogen, which can be used immediately. The plant could create up to 130,000 tons of hydrogen per year as the market for future fuels rises.
Current infrastructure
The Nord-West Oelleitung (NWO) port at Wilhelmshaven, where bp is a participating shareholder, already has infrastructure that it intends to use. One of the most significant energy terminals in the nation, Wilhelmshaven is well situated to facilitate energy transition activities thanks to its deep-water harbor and pipeline network.
Furthermore, BP’s plans call for using the existing oil and gas pipes for hydrogen transportation. The Ruhr region’s residents and those in demand centers might then receive the low-carbon hydrogen.
