Spain – Cummins will shortly begin construction on a new gigawatt electrolyzer manufacturing plant in Guadalajara, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain.
The location of a new proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer facility in Spain was chosen by Cummins last year. The business bought more than 530,000 square feet (50,000 square meters) of property earlier this year in Guadalajara, Castilla-La Mancha, where it is currently getting ready to start building.
At the end of 2023, the new PEM electrolyzer plant’s construction is expected to be finished. The facility, which is more than 200,000 square feet (20,000 square meters) in size, will house system assembly and testing and be able to generate 500MW of electrolyzers annually, with the capacity to increase to more than 1GW.
Hydrogen for decarbonization
A crucial factor in the decarbonization of the entire economy is “green” hydrogen, which is created through water electrolysis using renewable electricity. Hydrogen can be produced, stored, and transported as a gas or a liquid. For some of the most energy-intensive and difficult-to-reduce industries in the world, like heavy-duty commercial transportation, manufacturing, industrial processes, and chemical production, hydrogen provides an effective zero-emissions substitute for fossil fuels.
