United Kingdom – bp has submitted a bid for the proposed large-scale green hydrogen facility, HyGreen Teesside, to the Hydrogen Business Model (HBM) and Net Zero Hydrogen Fund (NZHF).
Both the HMB and NZHF want to build a low-carbon hydrogen economy in the UK and promote economic development. The company also negotiated four additional Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) involving the use of green hydrogen in businesses and communities.
The bp-built HyGreen Teesside green hydrogen plant has the potential to be one of the biggest in the UK. The project aims to produce hydrogen by 2025 with an initial planned phase installed capacity of 80MWe. By 2030, when HyGreen Teesside has grown up to 500MWe, it hopes to contribute up to 5% of the UK’s 10GW hydrogen objective. This could assist the UK in achieving its net-zero goals.
The green hydrogen plant in Teesside will be able to power 10,000 heavy-duty vehicles with the low-carbon hydrogen it produces, making Teesside the first large hydrogen transport hub in the UK.
New agreements
In addition to the previous two Memorandums of Understanding (MoU), the company also announced the signing of four more MoUs with regional businesses for the potential use of green hydrogen in workplaces and communities.
With the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Northern Gas Networks (NGN), bp will be selected as the primary hydrogen supplier for NGN’s Hydrogen Village in Redcar beginning in 2025. In some areas of Redcar, this includes switching the gas supply for around 2,000 homes and businesses to clean-burning hydrogen.
Additionally, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed with Ensus, the proprietor of the biggest renewable ethanol production facility in Europe located in Wilton on Teesside. This would allow for the replacement of natural gas with hydrogen produced at the ethanol manufacturing plants in Teesside by bp’s planned hydrogen plant. The MoU with Ensus demonstrates that businesses that are hard to control have a demand for hydrogen.
In addition to wanting to build one of Europe’s first lithium hydroxide processing facilities, Tees Valley Lithium inked an MoU with bp on the potential use of hydrogen to help it achieve its objective of creating the lowest carbon lithium hydroxide. This will assist in decarbonizing the production of EV batteries in Europe.
A new MoU with Sembcorp Energy UK was signed for the delivery of green hydrogen to look into decarbonization options for certain of its properties at Wilton International in Teesside.
Regarding the potential supply of low-carbon hydrogen from HyGreen Teesside or bp’s H2Teesside CCUS-enabled hydrogen project, CF Fertilizer and Venator previously consented to MoUs. The company’s planned hydrogen facilities and rising consumer interest support Bp’s goal of building a low-carbon hydrogen center in the Northeast of England.
In order to collaborate on the HyGreen Teesside hydrogen project, Masdar, an Abu Dhabi-based supplier of renewable energy, and bp inked a Memorandum of Understanding earlier this year. Bp has also started a number of green skills programmes in Teesside to support the project. This includes funding for Redcar and Cleveland College’s brand-new Clean Energy Education Hub, which will enable the community have opportunities to improve their green skills.
