Denmark – Topsoe has made the final investment decision to start building the largest SOEC electrolyzer production factory in Herning, Denmark.
Over DKK 2 billion ($270 million) is being invested by Topsoe, making it the company’s largest investment to date.
The current annual production capacity of the plant is 500 MW, with room to increase to 5 GW. Preliminary plans call for development to begin in the second part of 2022.
The new plant will be the largest SOEC factory in the world, with an annual capacity of 500 MW. The overall power requirements of SOEC are lower than those of alkaline and PEM technologies; further efficiency gains are achieved with the use of a steam feed into the SOEC process.
Transition to green energy
This is a big step forward for Topsoe, Denmark, and the European Union in their efforts to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels and make the transition to green energy. Also, in May 2022, Topsoe, along with other industry leaders and the European Commission, signed a Joint Declaration pledging to double the European electrolyzer manufacturing capacity by 2025, thus the company is making good on its REPowerEU goals.
