Portugal – McPhy has been chosen as the preferred supplier to equip the GreenH2Atlantic project in Sines, Portugal, with a 100 MW electrolysis plant.
Heads of terms have been agreed upon, and the supply agreement is expected to be finalized during the first semester of 2022. The project’s goal is to demonstrate the viability of green hydrogen on a previously unheard-of scale of production and technological application.
The renewable hydrogen production project in Sines, known as GreenH2Atlantic, will be developed by a consortium of 13 entities, including companies such as EDP, Galp, ENGIE, Bondalti, Martifer, Vestas Wind Systems A/S, McPhy, and Efacec, as well as academic and research partners such as ISQ, INESC-TEC, DLR, and CEA, as well as a public-private cluster, Axelera.
GreenH2Atlantic was one of three projects chosen by the Horizon 2020 ā€“ Green Deal Call to demonstrate the viability of large-scale green hydrogen production. The 30 million euro grant will aid in the construction of the hydrogen plant, which will be located in the coal-fired power plant area of Sines. Construction is expected to begin in 2023, with operation beginning in 2025, subject to obtaining the necessary authorizations from the authorities.
McPhy has been chosen as a preferred partner for its innovative electrolysis technology “Augmented McLyzer,” which will convert green electricity into more than 41 tons of clean hydrogen per year via electrolysis. McPhy will design, manufacture, and integrate this 100 MW electrolyzer, which will be made up of innovative, scalable, and fast-cycling 8 MW modules. The electrolysis platform will provide green hydrogen for industrial (refinery) and energy (gas grid injection) applications, thereby scaling up the link between renewables and industry, mobility, and energy applications.
Green hydrogen is expected to become one of the pillars of economic growth because it is a critical energy vector in the decarbonization process for the economy’s main sectors. In accordance with Europe’s decarbonization and energy transition strategies, this project will enable the conversion of a former coal-fired power plant into an innovative renewable hydrogen production hub.
GreenH2Atlantic’s creation of a “hydrogen valley” centered in Sines will significantly contribute to the region’s and Portugal’s sustainability goals, as well as to the European energy roadmap.
