Wärtsilä’s WARMS for ammonia-fueled shipping gets DNV approval

Energy Hydrogen

Finland – Wärtsilä has achieved a significant milestone with the Approval in Principle (AiP) from DNV for its pioneering technology called Wärtsilä Ammonia Release Mitigation Systems (WARMS).

This groundbreaking system addresses the safety concerns associated with future fuels like ammonia, which require careful handling and storage. With WARMS, emissions primarily consist of nitrogen and water, with ammonia emissions reduced to less than 30 ppm and often close to zero.

The AiP granted by DNV recognizes the potential of Wärtsilä’s WARMS technology for use on ammonia-fueled ships and gas tankers, reinforcing safety as a top priority. DNV’s Head of Section for Piping Systems & Alternative Fuels, Dalibor Bukarica, expressed satisfaction with the award, emphasizing the need for ammonia to be developed as a zero-carbon fuel option within a framework of advanced maritime industry regulations.

Green alternative

WARMS, designed for precise emissions monitoring, incorporates staged and controlled combustion, minimal energy consumption, and a compact footprint. This system offers a green and safe alternative to venting pure ammonia or utilizing hazardous dilution methods.
