Ørsted + ATP to turn North Sea Energy Island into digital hub

Energy

Denmark – Ørsted + ATP have signed a deal with GlobalConnect to turn the North Sea Energy Island into a backbone for Northern Europe’s future digitization and to attract large-scale digital investments to Denmark.

The North Sea Energy Island, according to Ørsted + ATP, should be more than just an island. It will be built using a groundbreaking modular design to become a future-proof and innovative piece of Danish infrastructure at the heart of the world’s largest offshore renewable energy network.

Ørsted + ATP are taking another important step toward transforming the North Sea Energy Island into an innovative and smart island, as well as a hub for a green and digitally connected future. GlobalConnect and Ørsted + ATP have agreed to make the North Sea Energy Island a cross-border digital hub. This is expected to be a significant opportunity to advance Northern Europe’s future digitization agenda, as well as a key enabler for attracting large-scale investments in digital infrastructure, such as data centers.

Furthermore, by transforming the North Sea Energy Island into a digital hub, Denmark will be in a prime position to attract investments in two of the world’s most promising long-term growth industries: renewable energy and digital infrastructure.

Attracting investment

Ørsted + ATP and GlobalConnect are paving the way for large operators with today’s agreement. The North Sea Energy Island’s proximity to large-scale emission-free energy and GlobalConnect’s secure and resilient digital backbone could thus attract significant investments to Denmark. Furthermore, by enabling autonomous operations and further digitizing offshore wind, the smart energy island will play a key role in the next phases of the regional offshore wind build-out.
