Liquid Wind, Umeå Energi and Wasaline partner on eMethanol sale

Sweden – Liquid Wind, Umeå Energi, and Wasaline have signed a Letter of Intent for the sale and purchase of eMethanol from the eFuel facility in Umeå, Sweden.

This collaboration marks a pivotal step in fueling the northernmost shipping line in the world, Wasaline, with eco-friendly eMethanol, aiming to revolutionize ferry operations between Vaasa in Finland and Umeå in Sweden.

The primary goal of this partnership is to transition Wasaline’s ferry operations towards full decarbonization. By leveraging eMethanol produced from renewable sources, the aim is to significantly reduce carbon emissions associated with maritime transport. The collaboration underscores a broader commitment to fostering sustainability within the shipping industry and advancing the adoption of green fuels.

Liquid Wind’s eFuel facility project, FlagshipTHREE, is at the forefront of eMethanol production, utilizing technology to produce 100,000 tons per year of eMethanol. This electrofuel, derived from renewable sources, serves as a clean and efficient alternative to traditional fossil fuels. Wasaline’s hybrid ferry, Aurora Botnia, equipped with dual-fuel engines and batteries, is poised to leverage eMethanol to power its operations, further enhancing its environmental credentials.

As production from the FlagshipTHREE facility commences in 2027, the journey towards greener seas gains momentum, setting a precedent for eco-friendly practices and inspiring similar initiatives.
