European port association renews North Sea Port environmental certificate

Energy

Belgium – For the second time, North Sea Port has been awarded the European Environmental Certificate by the European port organisation ESPO. As a result, North Sea Port continues to be the first transnational port to receive the “Port Environmental Review System” (PERS) certificate and the European environmental label.

When working on projects, the port is committed to lowering CO2 emissions. Moreover, shore power facilities are expanded. A marine Green Corridor is also being planned with Gothenburg and the Ghent-based shipping business DFDS. Future ships that are environmentally friendly will emit fewer emissions along the entire voyage, which will result in lower airport fees.

PERS quality label

The adoption of an environmental management system specifically designed for European ports for their sustainable development is guaranteed by the PERS accreditation. It allows for the evaluation of ports’ environmental performance and the implementation of necessary corrections. The effectiveness of the ports is assessed every two years, at which point the certification may be revoked or renewed. Ports that have received PERS certification are required to take steps to minimize emissions and improve environmental performance.

The PERS quality label is present in thirty European ports. The certificate is also held by the ports of Rotterdam, Groningen, Harlingen, and Den Oever in the Netherlands.
