The Netherlands – Uniper is using its BIO-LNG production capacity at the Gate terminal Rotterdam to convert biomethane into BioLNG for marine and truck fuels. This also allows Uniper’s LNG fleet to reduce its emissions.
The bio-LNG produced at Gate terminal is certified according to the ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) scheme. The underlying feedstock is biogas produced in one of the EU member states, upgraded to biomethane to remove substances such as carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide, and fed into the Dutch natural gas grid.
At the Gate exit point, the LNG terminal takes over the biomethane and liquefies it using the terminal’s existing infrastructure. The liquefier’s capacity is about 100,000 tons per year and can be used by existing shippers.
Uniper’s activities include power generation in Europe, global energy trading and a broad gas portfolio. Uniper purchases gas, including liquefied natural gas (LNG) and other energy resources in global markets. The company owns and operates gas storage facilities with a total capacity of more than 7 billion cubic meters.
