First lithium-ion battery cell assembled at Northvolt gigafactory in Sweden

Energy efficiency

Sweden – The first battery cell has been assembled at Northvolt Ett gigafactory in northern Sweden.

The cell is the first to be designed, developed, and assembled entirely in a gigafactory by a European battery company with roots in Europe, opening a new era in European industrial history.

First cell of Ett represents a significant milestone for Northvolt, which was announced in 2017 and has been working towards ever since. The cell has a prismatic shape. When the first commercial customer deliveries begin in 2022, the factory’s commissioning and scaling up will be completed.

Northvolt Labs, the industrialization facility in Västers, Sweden, developed the battery cell, which has been in production since the beginning of 2020. Toward the end of the next decade, Northvolt Ett’s production capacity will rise to 60 GWh per year in order to meet the $30 billion worth of contracts Northvolt has secured from key customers such as BMW and Fluence. Northvolt Ett will begin commercial deliveries of various cell formats in 2022 to these customers in the automotive, industrial, and energy storage sectors.
