Finland – Wärtsilä has joined the ABB-initiated Energy Efficiency Movement. The Energy Efficiency Movement’s objectives are supported by Wärtsilä’s pledge to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.
Launched in March 2021, ABB’s Energy Efficiency Movement aims to combat climate change by raising awareness and promoting activities that lower energy use and carbon emissions. Companies from all around the world are encouraged to support the initiative and make a public commitment in an effort to motivate others to take action.
The combined endeavor assembles an ecosystem with the goal of speeding initiatives to cut down on energy use and carbon emissions. Over the next 20 years, energy efficiency has the potential to cut greenhouse gas emissions by more than 40%, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). The industrial sector will provide half of this reduction.
Set for 30
Through its “Set for 30” program, Wärtsilä has pledged to becoming carbon neutral for its own operations by 2030. This includes power and heat for internal operations as well as research, development, and engine testing activities at the Sustainable Technology Hub in Vaasa.
Additionally, Wärtsilä will provide its clients with a product line that is prepared for zero-carbon fuels by the year 2030. The progressive phase-out of fossil fuels in the energy and maritime industries will be aided by this.
With its current product line, Wärtsilä is able to assist its clients in making the switch to carbon-neutral fuels like biofuels and synthetic methane. Hydrogen-natural gas mixtures with up to 25% hydrogen can also be used to power Wärtsilä engines. By 2025, a clean hydrogen engine and power plant idea should be ready for use.
