Germany – Basf, Linde, and Sabic are working on completing the construction of the electric demonstration cracker in Ludwigshafen. Recently, the last transformers were installed. The parties started building the electrically heated steam cracker about a year ago.

The cracker is used to test electric heating for the production of olefins. The installation has a power requirement of 6 MW, which is generated sustainably. The transformers ensure that the mains voltage is transformed to the required voltage. A total of nine transformers have been installed.

Subsidy

Basf, Sabic, and Linde built the first electrically heated steam cracker together in Ludwigshafen. The installation must be completed before the end of the year, after which it will be put into operation step by step. The project can count on a contribution of 14.8 million euros from the German Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate. It also receives a grant through the EU from the NextGenerationEU fund.
