Germany – Iveco Group has chosen BASF, a global chemical leader, as its first partner for implementing a comprehensive recycling solution for lithium-ion batteries used in the group’s electric vehicles.
This strategic collaboration aligns with Iveco’s circular economy strategy, emphasizing the 4R Framework – Repair, Refurbish, Repurpose, and Recycling – to extend battery lifetimes and minimize environmental impact.
The agreement encompasses battery collection, packaging, transport, and recycling activities across several European countries, including France, Germany, and the UK. BASF’s mechanical processing of the collected batteries will result in a black mass, extracting critical raw materials such as nickel, cobalt, and lithium. These recovered materials will be utilized in the manufacturing of new batteries, establishing a closed-loop system with a low carbon footprint.
Managing recycling
BASF will play a pivotal role in managing the recycling process for lithium-ion batteries deployed in Iveco Group’s electric vans, buses, and trucks. With the recent inauguration of Europe’s first co-located center for battery material production and recycling in Schwarzheide, Germany, BASF is well-equipped to organize the comprehensive recycling process.
This collaboration between Iveco Group and BASF marks a pioneering effort to establish a sustainable and closed-loop system for electric vehicle batteries.
