Shell starts bio-LNG plant construction in Germany

Chemcycling

Germany – The Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rheinland, Germany, has taken another step forward in its transformation by laying the groundwork for the construction of a bio-LNG plant.

The plant, which is scheduled to open in the fall of 2023, will be able to produce up to 100,000 metric tons of low-carbon bio-LNG per year. For heavy commercial vehicles, this fuel can aid in their transition to a cleaner fuel. Around 4000 to 5000 LNG trucks can be supplied each year by Rheinland’s production capacity.. This could save up to a million tons of CO2 per year compared to a conventional diesel truck.

Bio-LNG at Rhineland

It is anticipated that in the future, the bio-LNG plant will be fed by a standard gas pipeline, which can carry biomethane. This makes it possible to centrally process large quantities and make them available to the market. The gas is cooled to minus 162 degrees Celsius and liquefied into bio-LNG at the Rhineland plant. Afterwards, it is shipped to Shell LNG filling stations across Germany in specially designed tankers.

Shell’s green hydrogen electrolyser in Rheinland, which began operating last year, has reached another significant milestone.
