Belgium – Renewi and Freepoint Eco-Systems are partnering to produce raw materials for advanced plastic waste recycling. An advanced sorting and processing infrastructure should prevent end-of-life plastics from being incinerated. The goal is to supply 80,000 tons of raw material for Freepoint Eco-Systems’ yet-to-be-built advanced recycling plant in Ghent, Belgium.
This new sorting line will employ several innovative sorting techniques, including the use of waste heat from the new recycling plant. The plant will enable the recycling of complex mixed plastics that are difficult to process in any other way via pyrolysis, making it a perfect complement to mechanical recycling.
‘This project is a clear example that the plastic waste crisis can only be addressed through cross-industry cooperation,’ said Jacco de Haas, Chief Commercial Officer Recycling Europe of Freepoint Eco-Systems. ‘The waste streams that now end up in incineration, combined with Renewi’s expertise and the new sorting line, will increase overall plastic recycling and be fully complementary to mechanical recycling.’
