The Netherlands – Lummus Technology announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Braskem Netherlands, the world’s largest biopolymer producer.
The MOU calls for the licensing of Braskem’s green ethylene technology for two ethanol-to-ethylene conversion projects in North America and Asia, indicating a global interest in the technology.
Braskem and Lummus also plan to enter into a long-term licensing agreement for Lummus to use Braskem’s green ethylene technology to help the chemical industry use renewable feedstock and combat climate change by converting circular carbon from the atmosphere into plastic as an alternative to oil. With the goal of reducing carbon emissions and contributing to the energy transition and circular economy, this aligns with both organizations.
It also reflects Lummus’ strategic business direction, through its Green Circle subsidiary, as a leader in commercializing and developing breakthrough solutions to address the key pillars of the energy transition, such as plastics recycling, the production of bio-derived sustainable chemicals, and decarbonization strategies for both existing and new assets.
Over 120 ethylene plants have been licensed by Lummus around the world, which accounts for approximately 40% of global ethylene capacity. Additionally, Lummus has completed more than 200 ethylene plant design projects, far more than any other technology licensor.
Green polyethylene from sugarcane ethanol has been produced by Braskem for over a decade and is the world’s leading bioplastic.
