Norway – The Norwegian Minister of Energy has officially opened the CO2 transport and storage facility at the Northern Lights project in Øygarden near Bergen. This CO2 storage project is a joint venture between Shell, Equinor and TotalEnergies.
The Northern Lights project is part of Norway’s large-scale CCS project Longship. It involves capturing CO2 from industrial sources, shipping liquid CO2 to the terminal in Øygarden and transporting the CO2 by pipeline to the offshore storage site.
Northern Lights serves to gain experience with the entire CCS value chain. The initial storage capacity of 1.5 million tons of CO2 per year is fully booked. The partners are therefore working on plans to expand transport and storage capacity.
Yara Sluiskil signed an off-take contract with Northern Lights to store CO2 deep under the Norwegian seabed from 2025.
