Denmark – Ørsted has awarded Aker Carbon Capture a large-scale carbon capture project for its Ørsted Kalundborg Hub in Denmark.

Aker Carbon Capture will deliver five Just Catch units, supplementary machinery such liquefaction systems, temporary CO2 storage, and on-/offloading facilities as part of the carbon capture deal, with an anticipated total contract value exceeding EUR 200 million.

The Asnaes Power Station, which burns wood chips, and the Avedre Power Station, which burns straw, will receive the carbon capture facilities, which together will have an installed design capture capacity of 500,000 tonnes CO2 per year.

Partnership

This comes after the Danish Energy Agency (DEA) awarded Ørsted a 20-year contract for its carbon capture and storage (CCS) project. The money will make it possible for Ørsted, Aker Carbon Capture, Microsoft, and Northern Lights to deliver the first full-scale carbon capture and storage value chain in Denmark.

The partnership between Aker Carbon Capture, Ørsted, and Microsoft that was founded in 2021 is now delivering large-scale carbon removal using biogenic carbon capture and storage.

A Letter of Intent for the supply of two Just Catch units, which will be a component of the Ørsted Kalundborg Hub, was signed earlier this year by Ørsted and Aker Carbon Capture.

Biggest carbon removal deal

In this historic initiative, Microsoft will pay Ørsted for several million tonnes of high-quality, long-lasting carbon removal that will be stored and captured over the course of more than ten years. By volume, this arrangement is one of the biggest carbon removal offtake agreements ever.

The project is dependent on Ørsted and the DEA signing the funding contract, which completes the funding bidding process. This signing is anticipated to happen soon after the required standstill time has ended.
