India – Tata Steel today commissioned a 5 tonnes per day (TPD) carbon capture plant at its Jamshedpur Works, making it the first steel manufacturer in the country to employ this technology, which removes CO2 straight from Blast Furnace gas.

Tata Steel will repurpose the CO2 captured on-site to advance the circular economy.

This Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) plant use amine-based technology to capture carbon and then reuse it on-site. The depleted CO2 gas is reintroduced into the gas grid at a higher calorific value. This initiative was made possible by Carbon Clean, a global leader in low-cost CO2 collecting technology.

Green hydrogen

Tata Steel has invested in a number of projects over the last few years to harness clean and renewable energy, including the generation and use of green hydrogen and the adoption of waste heat recovery technologies. To advance its sustainability aims, Tata Steel is a member of ResponsibleSteelTM, the industry’s first worldwide multi-stakeholder standard and certification project.

Tata Steel has also achieved significant strides in its steel recycling sector, which is a critical step toward sustainable steel manufacturing. The Company has established its first steel recycling facility in Rohtak, Haryana, which will result in reduced carbon emissions, resource use, and energy usage.

Steel Sustainability Champions

Tata Steel India and Tata Steel Europe have been named Steel Sustainability Champions by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) for the fourth consecutive year. The award demonstrates Tata Steel’s dedication to sustainable business practices.

Tata Steel partnered with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in September 2020 to work in the field of Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) in order to strengthen the country’s ecosystem for reaching the Paris Agreement’s decarbonisation commitments.
