Italy – Maire’s subsidiary, KT – Kinetics Technology, has secured a €123 million Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract from Eni to construct a hydrogen production plant at its Livorno refinery, marking a crucial step to transform the facility into a biorefinery.

The primary goal of the project is to leverage natural gas and biogenic feedstocks to produce hydrogen, a key ingredient for biofuel production. The Livorno plant will process diverse biogenic feedstocks, including waste materials such as cooking oils, animal fats, and residues from the agribusiness industry.

KT – Kinetics Technology will play a pivotal role in designing and constructing the hydrogen production unit, ensuring efficient processing of various feedstocks. The plant’s flexibility is underscored by its design, allowing for the potential implementation of a residual CO2 capture unit in subsequent phases, further contributing to environmental sustainability.

Biofuels for mobility

The Livorno refinery’s conversion into a biorefinery is a significant step towards Eni’s commitment to sustainable practices. The hydrogen production plant, scheduled for completion in 2026, is poised to become a cornerstone in the production of biofuels for mobility. By utilizing waste materials and embracing innovative technologies, Eni aims to reduce its carbon footprint while meeting the growing demand for eco-friendly fuel alternatives.
