Ireland – Renovare Fuels is set to transform a Co Derry waste site into a green fuel hub in the Northern Ireland. This £9 million investment promises not only dozens of new jobs but also a critical step towards a sustainable future for transportation, particularly in hard-to-decarbonize sectors like aviation and maritime.
At the heart of this project lies Renovare’s innovative technology, developed in collaboration with NASA. This process repurposes methane-rich biogas from landfills, traditionally an environmental burden, into clean, high-performance biofuels. This “drop-in” replacement for diesel and aviation fuel boasts a remarkable 97% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, significantly boosting the fight against climate change.
The plant
The Craigmore plant, slated to open in 2024, will be the first of its kind in Europe, showcasing the transformative potential of landfill gas. By producing close to two million liters of advanced biofuels annually, it will directly address the fuel needs of challenging sectors like road haulage, maritime, and aviation, sectors struggling to achieve net-zero goals.
The project extends beyond environmental benefits. It brings much-needed job creation to Northern Ireland, with dozens of positions expected to be filled.
