Denmark – Norden, a leading shipping company, has acquired a minority stake in Mash Makes, a Danish biofuel scale-up.
The partnership aims to research, develop, and produce renewable fuels from biomass waste, specifically biooil. With this investment, Norden gains access to renewable fuels at favorable prices, positioning itself at the forefront of future renewable fuels development. The collaboration signifies a pivotal step in Norden’s journey towards sustainable shipping, enabling the supply of low-emission freight solutions to customers and advancing the adoption of next-generation biofuels in the maritime industry.
Norden’s investment in Mash Makes reflects the company’s commitment to decarbonization and sustainability. By securing access to renewable biooil, Norden aims to accelerate the transition from fossil fuels to low-carbon alternatives, driving a greener future for the shipping industry.
Large-scale consumption
The collaboration between Norden and Mash Makes goes beyond traditional off-take agreements with fuel suppliers. As a strategic partner, Norden will actively support Mash Makes in bringing its biooil products to the marine fuel market. This includes conducting trials of Mash Makes’ biooil on Norden vessels in early 2024, paving the way for potential large-scale consumption within the next three years.
Biooil offers a unique advantage as it can be used in existing vessel technologies, acting as a bridge between fossil fuels and carbon-free alternatives. This versatility makes it a viable option for shipping companies looking to decarbonize without major vessel technology upgrades.
The joint efforts of Norden and Mash Makes hold the potential to revolutionize the maritime industry’s approach to sustainability. With a commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, this partnership aligns with the global efforts to combat climate change and achieve a greener shipping future.
