The Netherlands – Neste is expanding its production capacity in Rotterdam to enable the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The investment of €190 million should enable Neste to produce up to 500,000 tonnes of SAF per year.
Currently, the refinery mainly produces Neste MY Renewable Diesel. The refinery modifications will enable Neste to produce up to 500,000 tonnes of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) per year. Neste expects the project to be completed in the second half of 2023.
Together with the ongoing expansion of the Singapore refinery, Neste will have the capacity to produce 1.5 million tonnes of SAF annually by the end of 2023. Currently, Neste’s annual production capacity of renewable jet fuel is 100,000 tonnes. In pure form and over its life cycle, SAF reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to eighty percent compared to fossil paraffin according to Neste.
Investment decision
‘This investment in SAF capacity in Rotterdam is another important step for Neste in implementing our growth strategy. To become a world leader in renewable and circular solutions,’ said Peter Vanacker, President and CEO at Neste. ‘We want to help our customers reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by at least 20 million tonnes by 2030.’
Earlier this year, Neste announced that it is ready to make a final investment decision on the construction of the next refinery for Neste’s renewable products in Rotterdam. That decision will be made by the end of this year or in early 2022.
