Wärtsilä to provide biogas liquefaction technology in Sweden

Biobased

Sweden – Wärtsilä will provide biogas liquefaction technology for a major new project in Mönsters, Sweden.

Scandinavian Biogas Mönsters, a joint venture firm involving the project’s local farmers and Scandinavian Biogas Fuels (SBF), the principal owner, has placed an order for the system. As a replacement for fossil LNG, the plant will produce bioLNG, which will be used to power heavy vehicles and help create a transportation system free of fossil fuels.

The device will be able to create 30 tons of bioLNG each day. It will be the company’s first project of this size to pre-treat biogas with its amine scrubber type Puregas CA technology before liquefying it with its mixed refrigerant (MR) process.

bioLNG to reduce emissions

The technology will generate bioLNG with a negative carbon footprint, helping to reduce greenhouse gases in the environment overall.

The supply will also include a bioLNG storage facility and export terminal in addition to the biogas liquefaction system. A three-year servicing contract has also been inked.

The Wärtsilä equipment is projected to start arriving in the first half of 2024, and by the end of the year, the facility should be completely operating.
