UECC adds Svitzer’s EcoTow to replace fossil with biofuel in Scandinavia

Biobased

Denmark – Svitzer’s EcoTow product, through which fossil fuels are replaced with biofuels on Svitzer’s tugs, has received a three-year contract from UECC, a major provider of short sea transportation services for automobiles and other rolling cargo in Europe.

In the short term, biofuels are among the best fuels for decarbonization because they are widely available and can easily and immediately reduce tank-to-wake emissions for existing vessels by up to 100%.

Decreasing emissions

With the help of the new partnership, UECC’s seaborne Scope 3 emissions—which include indirect emissions from business operations along the entire value chain of IUCC—will be reduced by almost 25%. Over the course of the contract with Svitzer, it is anticipated that CO2 emissions from UECC’s towage operations at the ports of Esbjerg, Gothenburg, and Malmo will decrease by more than 300,000 kilograms.

With the implementation of the IMO’s Carbon Intensity Indicator beginning on January 1, 2023, and the Fuel EU Maritime regulation scheduled to be phased in starting in 2025, shipowners will need to meet more stringent environmental performance standards.
