Greencoat acquires UK largest biomass plant

Biobased

United Kingdom – Glennmont Partners has agreed to sell to Greencoat Capital a 100 percent of Margam Green Energy Plant (MGEP), a waste wood-fired biomass plant in Port Talbot, South Wales.

With a processing capacity of c.290 thousand tonnes per annum (ktpa) of waste wood, MGEP has been operational since May 2019 and is one of the largest biomass plants in the UK. The plant’s net capacity of 41.8MW is enough to offset approximately 150,000 tons of CO2 per year.

UK supply

The supply of low-quality waste wood in the UK is expected to grow in line with economic growth and construction and demolition activity, and MGEP is well positioned to profit from these trends. Apart from biomass, the only other viable options for these grades of wood are landfill or export, implying that MGEP converts what would otherwise be waste into energy.
